Westerkeersluis Control Post

Sculptural beacon on the IJ

Like a beacon, the control building sits on the quay wall that transitions into the bridgehead. From the building, the operation of a large number of bridges in the wider area is regulated. Due to its design, the small building presents itself as a striking object, visible from the surrounding landscape. At night, light shines through the extensive glass of the 24-hour building, acting as a lantern.

Maximum panoramic view
For functional reasons, the transparency of a crystal was also sought. From the inside, there had to be maximum and unobstructed views of the surroundings. To keep the glass as transparent as possible, an umbrella construction was chosen. A functional steel core supports the cantilevered roof all around, allowing the load-bearing glass facade to be constructed without profiles and offering a panoramic view of the surroundings on all sides.

Sculpture formed by lines of sight

During the process, the association with a crystal emerged. The form has been 'cut' according to requirements regarding sightlines, the program, orientation to the sun, the opening of the bridge, and the framework of the zoning plan. To emphasize the monolithic sculptural form, the facades are clad with a rubber-like polyurethane coating.

Utilitarian character
During the process of 'polishing', the building has become richer in associations with shipbuilding and civil engineering. The building evokes associations with the traditional lift bridge, the glass cabins of tugboats, and the red lead-colored steel of inland vessels. These associations refer to the utilitarian character of the building. To emphasize the monolithic sculptural form, the facades are clad with a rubber-like polyurethane coating. The soft green color refers to the shipping industry, where this red lead color is found.
